Family photography in Nairobi that feels like your family

Photographs of the people who make home feel like home

Families rarely stay exactly the same for long. Children grow, relatives travel, new members arrive and ordinary seasons become memories. A family photoshoot gives you more than a picture of everyone looking at the camera. It preserves the relationships, personalities and closeness that define your family now.

Shammah Media provides family photography in Nairobi for immediate families, several generations, visiting relatives and special reunions. Your session can take place at home, outdoors or at another suitable setting, depending on your family’s comfort and the look you want.

We guide you through the portraits without forcing every person into the same stiff pose. Essential group photographs give you timeless images for frames and gifts, while natural interaction brings warmth and movement into the collection. You do not need to arrive knowing what to do; we help you plan the people, pace and setting before the session.

Choose the family session that fits this moment

Immediate-family portraits

Create a balanced collection of the whole family, parents or guardians with children, siblings, individual portraits and smaller relationship groups. We prioritise the combinations you most want to display or share, then leave room for relaxed photographs together.

Extended and multi-generational families

Bring grandparents, adult siblings, cousins and several households into one meaningful collection. Larger groups need a suitable space, a clear participant list and enough time, but the result can become one of the few complete records of everyone together.

Family reunions and visits to Kenya

If relatives are travelling to Nairobi or visiting Kenya for a limited period, we can plan around the dates when everyone is available. Share arrival, departure and family-event plans so the session does not compete with a rushed journey or an overloaded day.

Outdoor family photoshoots

An outdoor setting gives children room to move and can create an easy, natural atmosphere. We consider light, weather, access, privacy, crowds and walking distance before agreeing on the location. The best setting is one that supports your family, not simply a place that is popular online.

At-home family photography

Your home can give the photographs familiarity and personal meaning, especially for young children or relatives who prefer not to travel. We can combine guided portraits with quieter images of your family interacting in a space that belongs to you.

Family portraits for a milestone

An anniversary, new home, homecoming or important birthday can be the reason everyone finally gathers. We centre the session on the family while making room for the milestone details that matter to you.

A session shaped around real relationships

Your family does not need to copy another family’s poses or clothing to look good in photographs. We begin with who is coming, why the session matters and which relationships you most want to preserve. From there, we create a simple flow that protects the essential portraits and still feels natural.

The full-family photograph may be the image that hangs on the wall, but smaller combinations often carry just as much meaning: grandparents with grandchildren, siblings together, each parent with the children, a couple on their own or cousins reconnecting after time apart. Tell us what is important in your family rather than assuming we will know every relationship from the guest list.

Not every photograph needs everyone smiling at the lens. Conversation, play, walking, a shared joke or a quiet embrace can reveal how your family feels together. Our role is to guide the setting and composition while giving those moments space to happen.

How your family photoshoot works

Share your preferred dates, number of adults and children, children’s ages and the reason for the session. Mention grandparents, accessibility needs, visiting relatives and any person with limited availability.

We consider children’s routines, travel, older relatives, weather, light and privacy. Together, we select a practical home, outdoor or other approved location and a time when your family is most likely to feel comfortable.

We create a short priority list of whole-family and smaller groups. This keeps important relationships from being missed without turning the session into a long checklist of near-identical arrangements.

We help with positioning and prompts, then adjust the sequence around children’s attention, family energy and anyone who needs to leave early. You can focus on being together instead of directing every photograph.

Your selected photographs are professionally edited and delivered as agreed in your quotation. Our normal photography turnaround is two to four weeks. If the images are needed for an anniversary, gift or announcement, mention the date when enquiring.

Family photographs with children

Children often need a little time to understand a new person and setting. Tell us their ages, routines and anything that helps them feel secure. Where possible, choose a time that does not collide with a meal or rest, and bring familiar essentials without filling the session with too many props.

We begin with the combinations most dependent on the youngest child’s attention, then introduce movement and interaction. A child does not need to smile on command in every frame. Curiosity, closeness, laughter and even a thoughtful expression can all become honest, beautiful photographs.

Adults set the tone. Calm encouragement usually works better than repeated corrections or promises for each pose. If a child needs a break, the session can continue with another combination and return to the group later where time allows.

Parents or authorised caregivers remain responsible for children throughout the session. Tell us clearly if a child must not be photographed or if the finished images require special sharing restrictions.

Make grandparents and older relatives a priority

Multi-generational portraits can become impossible to recreate, which is why we photograph them early. We consider comfortable seating, walking distance, temperature and session length when older relatives are joining. You can privately share any mobility, hearing or vision consideration that affects how we communicate or arrange the group.

A useful sequence may include everyone together, grandparents with all grandchildren, grandparents with each household, adult siblings and individual relationships that matter to your family. We keep the list focused so participants are not exhausted before the natural photographs begin.

If relatives are arriving from abroad or joining briefly between other commitments, give us the exact window in advance. We can protect their essential photographs instead of leaving them until the end of the session.

What to wear for family photographs

Aim for connection rather than identical outfits. Choose a shared level of formality and colours that sit well together, while allowing each person to feel like themselves. Soft neutrals, complementary tones or a restrained colour palette can help the eye stay on faces and relationships.

Consider the location, weather and how much movement the session will involve. Very small, high-contrast patterns can look distracting, while large logos may date the photograph or pull attention from the group. Young children benefit from comfortable clothes and a practical backup option.

Traditional, cultural and religious clothing can give the portraits deep meaning and should be included respectfully. Tell us if an important garment needs privacy, careful handling or a particular sequence. You are welcome to bring a second look when the session time and changing facilities make it realistic.

At home, outdoors or another setting?

At-home sessions are personal and convenient. They can work especially well for young children, older relatives and families who want photographs connected to everyday life. Before we arrive, choose the rooms you are comfortable using, clear private documents and remove only the clutter you do not want in the frame. Your home does not need to look like a showroom.

Outdoor sessions offer space, variety and movement. The location needs suitable access, safe footing and a realistic alternative if the weather changes. Public settings can also bring crowds and less privacy, so we weigh the visual appeal against your family’s comfort.

If you prefer a hired studio or private venue, availability, rules and fees are confirmed before booking. Shammah Media will confirm the actual studio arrangement rather than promising a facility that has not been secured.

Choose the right photography experience

Family photography is designed around relationships across the group. If pregnancy is the main story, a dedicated maternity photography session provides more specific planning for comfort, styling and the expectant parent. For a very young baby, our newborn and baby photography page explains the slower, baby-led approach.

We can include a birthday or graduation portrait within a family session when the scope remains realistic. A full party or ceremony, however, needs event coverage planned around its programme. Tell us the main purpose first and we will guide you to the most suitable option.

Privacy belongs to your family

Family photographs can reveal children, relationships, homes, schools and travel. You decide who receives the files, whether a gallery needs restricted access and which images may be posted publicly.

Booking a session does not automatically give Shammah Media permission to use your photographs in its portfolio or advertising. Any promotional use is discussed separately from delivery of the service. We do not identify private families, children or homes without appropriate permission.

If different households will receive the collection, agree on sharing expectations before distribution. A private family photograph can travel far once it is posted online, so the people commissioning and receiving the images should respect any restrictions agreed for children or vulnerable relatives.

Turn the session into something you can hold

Digital images are ideal for sharing across households, but a finished portrait gives the session a lasting place in your home. Shammah Media can add canvas printing, photo frames and mounts or a photobook when the product is included in your quotation.

Think about where the photograph will live before choosing a size. A wide multi-generational image may suit a large horizontal display, while smaller relationship portraits can form a coordinated wall collection. We check the selected image, crop and orientation before a product is made.

A photobook can combine the formal groups, individual portraits and natural moments into one family story. If copies are gifts for several households, include the quantity and deadline early enough for design, proofing and production.

Family photography in Nairobi and across Kenya

Shammah Media is based at Taveta Court on Tsavo Road in Nairobi and photographs families at suitable locations across the city. Sessions elsewhere in Kenya can also be assessed according to the date, setting, participants and travel requirements. Any travel, accommodation or additional logistics will be shown in your quotation where applicable.

When family members are visiting Kenya, share the full date range rather than a single difficult hour. A little flexibility can produce a calmer session, better light and photographs that do justice to the reunion.

What determines the cost of your family session

Your quotation is based on the location, session duration, number and ages of participants, travel, required coverage and finished products. An immediate-family portrait appointment is different from coordinating several households and generations, so we price the actual session you need.

The written quotation will explain what is included, the expected turnaround and any optional print products. Share the images that matter most and any budget range; we can recommend a focused session rather than hiding important limits behind a generic package name.
